RECEIVE THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND CULTIVATE THE FRUITS
Pentecost marks fifty days since Easter Sunday, the
Resurrection of the Lord, and is the birthday of the Church. It commemorates
Jesus’ gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church and to each of us, the baptized.
The first reading and the Gospel according to John
complement each other and teach us that the Spirit is the new law, the force
that leads us to do good. The Spirit is the source of unity. It removes
barriers and wherever the Spirit dwells, sin is destroyed.
The sequence that we pray on Pentecost Sunday is an ancient
reflection on the work of the Holy Spirit: wash clean what is sordid, bring to
life what is dying, cure what is wounded, loosen what is rigid, warm what is
frozen, straighten what is crooked. This is the Holy Spirit at work deep inside
us, taking our broken parts, mending them, and guiding our minds, hearts, and
souls in a unifying Christ-ward direction.
The second reading describes a consequence of the presence
of the Spirit. Each of us has been given gifts by the same Spirit and they must
not be a source of competition but should rather be put at the service of others.
On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit, the manifestation of the
love between the Father and the Son presents us with seven gifts: wisdom,
understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. These
gifts help us grow in holiness and remind us of God’s loving presence within
and around us. These gifts, when nurtured within us, result in the fruits of
the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, goodness, and self-control.
On this Spiritual Workout Wednesday, let’s learn

receive the gifts with an open heart so that the fruits may be born of our love
and service to others.
