GONE FROM OUR SIGHT BUT NOT FROM OUR LIFE

The Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord into Heaven is a holy day of obligation and is affirmed in the creed that we recite during Sunday Mass: “He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.”

The Ascension recalls Jesus returning to the glory of the Father in heaven and what that means for humanity. Jesus’ Ascension reminds us that He is not bound by time and space. He can minister to the whole world and to all people, including us, all the time and everywhere. Jesus did not abandon us!

The Ascension means a different kind of presence. Jesus remains with us, but our experience of Him is not like that of His disciples who saw Him, touched Him, and ate with Him. The experience of the Ascended Lord is through faith, the sacraments, prayer, and the communal life of the Church.

The Ascension brings to us a message of hope, that where Jesus is now, we will be someday. As He said, “I am going to prepare a place for you.”  Heaven is our true home.

On this Spiritual Workout Wednesday, let’s remember what Jesus said to the disciples before ascending into heaven, “You will be my witnesses… to the ends of the Earth.” (Acts 1:8). This is a call for all of us, to become witnesses for Jesus and for our faith and to announce the good news to others that Jesus is gone from our sight, but not from our life. As witnesses for Jesus, let us walk each other home.
